If one enters a protected region, you cannot ride your own horse, or use potions. This wasn't the case prior to 1.8.

I wouldn't list that as a bug, but a feature!
Jokes aside, a wild horse could just be strolling near a map. Using apples to tame it (you can get apples in maps still), they could right click on the horse, and then ride away.
Same if they find a potion of jump boost on the ground.

Same with pigs? The region code dealing with entities associated with players might not be reading the UUID's properly.
