    It's meant to be any that are not currently occupied are open. In practice, it's been near impossible to find a solution that doesn't break when the chunk is unloaded.

    Another approach, if there is hesitance towards setting a precedent with this, would be to replace the death mechanic with a simulated death. Everything that a death accomplishes for a course can be done without killing the player.

    This has been a bug with minecraft in general since I was a new green. It hasn't been a big concern so far, as the timing was fairly difficult to get correct. One solution to deal with it is to add lava below fall areas (both discouraging the fall logging and allowing shorter falls to kill).
